Launching a career in one of Europe’s beacons for sustainable energy: Finland

Finland is an easy choice for those interested in sustainable energy topics, with its world-leading education system and commitment to environmentally friendly principles.  That is why EIT InnoEnergy Master School has partnered with Aalto University – an institute born through the merging of three leading Finish Universities in 2010 – to offer some of its most cutting-edge Master´s programmes.

José Luis González Escobedo´s career is a testament to the opportunities that such a unique location provides. After graduating from EIT InnoEnergy’s Master’s in Sustainable Energy Systems back in 2014, José Luis pursued a Doctoral degree at Aalto University and he is now working as a researcher at Neste – a pioneering company in the renewable fuels and chemicals business.

An ideal location to study sustainable energy

Students interested in Finland have the option to enrol in EIT InnoEnergy´s Master’s in Sustainable Energy Systems (SELECT) or the Master’s in Energy Storage at Aalto University. Both programmes are a unique offering that combines technical knowledge, commercial awareness and an entrepreneurial spirit – providing unparalleled career possibilities via the engineering skills and an innovation mindset that is urgently needed in these fast-evolving fields. José Luis shares, “My courses and MSc thesis at Aalto University were directly related to what I’m doing at Neste – developing the technology for renewable applications. The work is highly collaborative, and team based. I think that the numerous team project assignments required in the programme were particularly helpful to get used to this way of working.”

Finland – ready for the Energy storage boom!

As the EU Battery Alliance calls for 10-20 Giga battery factories to be established in Europe, just to keep up with the growing demand for batteries in the EV market and other sectors – Finland lends itself as the perfect location. Ripe with key raw materials and the high-quality chemicals need for batter production, Finland easily hits the top of the list for excellent sites for battery component and cell manufacturing. This fortuitous combination of natural resources, an attractive business environment and world-class expertise also makes Finland the perfect place to study this exciting field.

Career opportunities in Finland

According to José Luis: “Finnish companies have navigated quite well through the pandemic. There are high ambitions here for the circular economy and energy transition, so talent and expertise are and will continue to be in great demand.” This comes to no one´s surprise as prosperous Finnish companies such as Terraframe, Keliber and Nornickel are currently expanding the production of valuable core ingredients such as nickel, cobalt and lithium. The stage is set for expansion and the opportunity is there for energetic young minds to accomplish it! Since mineral and chemical production in Finland is conducted in line with strict environmental regulations and sound sustainability principles, this assures a steadily growing job market for sustainable energy engineers and entrepreneurs.

Leveraging Aalto’s innovative ecosystem

From a country ranked one of the happiest and most prosperous countries globally, it should come as no surprise that they also top many prestigious lists for providing the best education. The Academic Ranking of World Universities from 2020 specifically named Aalto University as the third best university worldwide. Students can expect excellent living conditions and an eco-friendly society, while the university itself is surrounded by innovative companies, start-ups, and technology parks. This close proximity to a booming industry allows students to establish strong industrial ties before they graduate – offering them a distinct advantage in the job market! José Luis adds, “Aalto is very well connected to industry and VTT, Finland’s technical research centre. Thus, there are many opportunities for summer works and MSc theses. Aalto is continuously growing and has high ambitions, so I think it’s a great place to study.”

Join the sustainable energy revolution!

“If you’ve been considering joining one of the fastest-growing sectors in the sustainable energy revolution, battery storage, or want to contribute to minimising the environmental impact of current and future energy systems – this is your chance. Head North to Aalto University and put yourself at the very epicentre of what’s happening now in the sustainable energy industry, at one of the top universities in the world.” concludes José Luis.
