With dozens of battery value chain projects rising in Europe between 2020 and 2025, the programme gives you access to unparalleled career opportunities. It also provides you with the engineering skills and innovation mindset that new-generation employers urgently need in this exciting and fast-evolving field.
Join a field that is shaping the future of Europe
Europe’s forward-looking approach to the battery value chain (including electric vehicles) is at the center of its ambitions to reach climate-neutrality. Batteries, alone, represent a €250 billion market opportunity today. The sector is forecast to create more than 100,000 new jobs every year from 2020.
By 2025, more than 20 battery cells factories and additional 20 battery materials projects across Europe will be operational. This includes ambitious plans from Tesla, Volkswagen, Samsung and – EIT InnoEnergy-suported initiatives: Northvolt, in Sweden, who has recently raised $2.75 billion in equity leading up to 150 GWh of deployed annual production capacity; and Verkor, in France, who has recently raised €100m in funding to support the construction of the Verkor Innovation Centre (VIC) where the advanced battery cells and modules will be designed to support Europe’s net-zero goals.
The Master’s in Energy Storage is a new generation learning journey that equips you with the tools to meet these challenges, tap into these opportunities and to launch a world-class career that can influence every step of the renewable energy value chain. The programme empowers you to:
Master the complete array of conversion and storage technologies
Specialise in one of two critical fields: stationary applications or electric mobility
Build leading-edge business and entrepreneurial skills
And leverage a future world of possibilities at the tipping point in sustainable global energy.
The programme
The Master’s in Energy Storage programme draws fully the industry-acclaimed EIT InnoEnergy network. You spend two years at two of Europe’s foremost universities and your learning journey in enriched by:
Industry internships
Input and insight from industry experts
Real-world case studies
Entrepreneurial projects
Field trips and site visits
Exposure to InnoEnergy network including the European Battery Alliance – at the very forefront of energy storage in Europe
Programme Journey
The Master’s in Energy Storage is a comprehensive deep dive into the full array of energy conversion and storage technologies from electrochemical (battery) to thermal, thermochemical, hydropower, thermos mechanical - all taught in English!
You choose between three world-class European universities, changing over between years one and two to complete semesters in two different institutions. As a result, you obtain a double degree from two of the following institutions:
In year 1, you complete a full curriculum of subjects that ground you in the core technical areas of energy storage, while laying down your management understanding and business innovation mindset. This is enriched and given real-world context by interactive resources, hands-on activities and industry field trips that expose you to energy storage in action.
In year 2, you also have the opportunity to pursue a specialisation between:
Electric mobility
Stationary applications
Finally, your learning is anchored in the development of world-class business and entrepreneurial skills and new-generation digitalisation competencies.
Your Master Thesis
You can choose a thesis topic that is part of a wider research project (e.g. from a university in the IT InnoEnergy consortium or a research centre) but it may also be directly related to industry, ranging from start-ups to large energy companies. The location for your thesis, whether it is an industrial enterprise or research institution, will depend on your chosen.
Double degree
After successfully completing the Master’s in Energy Storage programme, you will receive a degree from each of your chosen universities:
EIT InnoEnergy continually strives to improve the quality, structure and content of our Master’s School programmes. Therefore, some changes may occur as part of our quality control process.
The Innovation & Entrepreneurship Journey is a parallel track that you follow during your Master’s programme.
With an enormous demand and high European Union targets for Energy Storage, students of the programme will benefit from some of the most exclusive industry opportunities...

Accelerated industry and start-up immersion
Students at Aalto University will benefit from its unique location. Battery enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that “Finland has the key raw materials and high-quality chemicals required for battery production”, making it an attractive destination for key businesses in energy storage.
From PV Tech Lab and multiple energy storage projects to Alqueva dam study visit, students will be immersed in the energy storage mission, securing world-class expertise and relevant industry connections.
Students at Politecnico di Torino, will have an opportunity to meet one of the world's leading automotive manufacturers, Maserati. Known for its passion for design and innovation, the company is investing in production, electrification and autonomous driving technologies. During a tailored company visit, you will build future connections and learn how Maserati drives research technology, development and planning.
You will also have access to I3P,the Best Public Business Incubator in the world by the World Rankings of Business Incubators and Accelerators 2019-2020. I3P offers students an opportunity to create and develop a high-tech innovative start-up with a high growth potential! I3P has an impressive track record as startups supported in recent years have raised total seed and early investments for 13 million Euros, reaching about 90 million Euros of aggregate post-money value.
Students at IST: Instituto Superior Tecnico benefit from its association with Smart Energy Lab. Through its association with industry and academia, Smart Energy Labs supports the development of leading-edge technologies in fields such as energy storage.
Together with IST and Smart Energy Lab, students take a look at the value-chain of future energy systems including topics like renewable sources, distributed power generation and energy systems management but also complementary skills like data analytics and energy markets economics.
Access to key industry events
Unless you are lucky to have contacts at the company of your dreams, the programme networking activities will play a huge role in your career journey after graduation. With most of the opportunities out there not advertised, it is imperative to practice your networking skills and build the right connections during your studies!
Master’s in Energy Storage selected three key industry events for its students to participate in:
Web Summit
The annual conference in Lisbon, considered as one of the best technology events of the year brings Fortune 500 companies, groundbreaking startups, world-class speakers and Master's in Energy Storage students to connect under one roof!
Slush
Concentrated on matchmaking and pitching competitions, Slush is arguably one the most founder-focused events on earth. With an aim to build a start-up community, it is an excellent platform for future entrepreneurs in Master's in Energy Storage!
Energy Storage Project
During year 1, students are introduced to the entrepreneurial mind-set and apply it to a project aimed at developing a business plan for an energy storage company.
The project is complemented by visits to different locations, for example European islands. There, students analyse the different energy systems, network with local players and fine-tune their business ideas.
The first year journey concludes with a Final Gala where students from all three universities present their business proposals.
During the second year, students can develop this idea further during EIT InnoEnergy's Battle of Green Talent (more info below), during pitching sessions to investors organised at industry events or even as part of their Master's thesis at Aalto University.
Battle of Green Talent
The Battle of Green Talent is an online entrepreneurship competition designed for all EIT InnoEnergy students.
You get immersed in an online entrepreneurial ecosystem. During 6 monhts, you transform your bright ideas into promising business while competing with peers, interacting with virtual investors from top business schools around the world and get advice from experienced business creation professionals.
The best team of entrepreneurs and talents wins a package with a cash prize of €10,000.- and a voucher worth €5,000.- to benefit from start-up incubation services from EIT InnoEnergy.
Data Science for Energy Engineers
Students of the Master's in Energy Storage are also trained in data science skills to analyse, forecast and optimise energy demand using Python.
This training ensures students are prepared to land jobs in a high-demand sector within the energy industry. It includes modules such as:
