Programme Journey
Year 1
All students follow their first year of studies atKTH: Royal Institute of Technology, in Stockholm, Sweden. There, you will focus on the fundamentals of electric energy systems, including: power system analysis, power electronics, electrical machines, and high-voltage engineering. KTH also offers a mandatory course in innovation and entrepreneurship in electric-power engineering.
Year 2
For your second year, you choose an area in which to specialise at one of four universities:
During year 1, students also take part on our SENSE European Modules which cover topics such as energy efficiency, storage options, energy generation and more. Students learn from experts located across the continent at our partner universities and engage in industry visits to companies such as ABB and Scania, leader in the electrification of the transport industry in Sweden.
Add-on module: Applications of battery storage at Uppsala University , Sweden.
These pan-European modules give students a holistic view of the challenges and opportunities in electric power engineering in the continent. Besides, they are the perfect opportunity to experience some of the year 2 universities during year 1.
Your Master Thesis
You complete your second and final year with a Master’s thesis, which you undertake at one of our industrial or research partners. The thesis is worth 30 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System credits (ECTS) and corresponds to five months of full-time study.
Your thesis should be clearly orientated towards innovative solutions that are relevant to electric power. Many of our students have completed their thesis with companies like:
ABB
Fortum
Scania
Schneider Electric
Tesla

Industrial Innovation Project
The Industrial Innovation Project is one of the highlights of the Master's in Smart Electrical Networks and Systems. It gives you the opportunity to work on real-world challenges set by industry including companies such as Vattenfall, Stora Enso, Skeleton and more.
You work in close collaboration with industry players on developing innovative solutions to some of the problems they face. You work in a team with fellow students, and will undertake at least part of your project on site at the business partner that initially set the challenge.
Entrepreneurship Summer School
In the summer between your first and second year, you will attend a four-week course on entrepreneurship at theESADE Business Schoolin Barcelona.
During the four weeks you will attend highly interactive lectures each day, as well as working on an entrepreneurial project relating to innovation in smart grids. The goal of the project work is to create a start-up from ideation to first pitch to potential business angels. You will develop a customer-focused, market-oriented business and financial plan, and present to key partners and experts in the field.
The Meet
The MEET event is the moment when all Master's in Smart Electrical Networks and Systems students come together!
Year 1 and year 2 students meet at KTH: Royal Institute of Technology to present some of the innovative ideas they work on. Year 1 students present the results of their Industrial Innovation Projects, while Year 2 students present the preliminary results of their thesis either as a seminar session or joint poster session.
MEET is also an opportunity to network, meet some of your peers and share some of your experiences in the programme.
Your Master’s thesis
You are encouraged to undertake your thesis at one of the programme’s industry partners. The thesis work gives you privileged access to the most prestigious industries whose experts act as the mentors of your work.
