A group of MSc EMINE students (European Master in Nuclear Energy) from the French engineering school Grenoble INP organised and animated the first “Watts up?” conference on world energy issues, with the support of the KIC InnoEnergy Master school. The conference and debates that followed were attended by over 80 participants.

Throughout the preparation phase, the students were mentored by their Professor Alexis Nuttin and coached by environmental experts: Prof. Livet from Grenoble INP, Prof. Loiseaux from Grenoble Alpes Universités, Prof. Treiner from IEP Paris and Prof. Nifenecker from UIAD, also President of “Sauvons le Climat”.

The twelve MSc students in nuclear engineering presented through 5-minute individual presentations their analysis of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report (IPCC) to a large non-specialist audience. Organised in two thematic groups, the first one discussed Changes, causes, risks and impacts, and analysed observed changes from sea level rise to greenhouse gas emissions rise. The second group presented why Adaptation and mitigation responses are essential to reduce the risk of climate change, and are considered as two complementary strategies – there is no planet B!

The conclusions highlighted topical issues by overlapping on geopolitical matters: world energy and climate change issues are direct influencers of world peace.

Well-done to all stakeholders for this successful exercise of challenge-driven pedagogy!
