NÜWIEL and EIT InnoEnergy partner to accelerate the urban mobility transition

NÜWIEL, the Hamburg based pioneer in efficient, emission-free urban mobility, has entered into a partnership with EIT InnoEnergy, the innovation engine for sustainable energy for sustainable energy supported by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology, a body of the European Union (EU). Under the terms of the partnership, NÜWIEL will receive comprehensive support to rapidly scale, including access to EIT InnoEnergy’s international partner ecosystem. NÜWIEL plans to more than double series production of its eTrailer this year and to launch it on the Austrian, French, Belgian and Dutch markets. There is also the intention in the medium term to enter the end-customer segment. The team from Hamburg is working on various projects relating to this segment, including an intuitive app for the booking process.

Supporting Nüwiel’s ambitious growth plans

Natalia Tomiyama, co-founder and managing director of NÜWIEL said: “Right now, more than 4000 packages are being delivered every second worldwide. If we do not make a radical shift in the way we transport goods from A to B in our cities, it is not just our transport system that will sink to its knees. Emissions and congestion will go through the roof. With our eTrailers we have launched a platform solution that fits seamlessly into our existing cycling and pedestrian infrastructure so almost right away it can contribute significantly to making the movement of goods within cities more efficient and climate-neutral. We are delighted to have EIT InnoEnergy as a strategic partner and investor on board. Its know-how and resources will greatly assist us in achieving our ambitious growth targets.”

Jennifer Dungs, Thematic Field Leader Energy for Transport and Mobility at EIT InnoEnergy, added: “The boom in e-commerce has led to a massive increase in urban deliveries, and this trend will continue. Unless we press the reset button now, by 2030 there will be around 36 percent more vans on our city streets, 30 percent higher emissions and 20 percent more traffic jams. NÜWIEL’s highly versatile electric trailers are one of the unassuming yet ingenious solutions that will take package deliveries in our cities to a completely new level in terms of efficiency and sustainability. Feedback from pilot customers speaks for itself.”

Nüwiel’s eTrailers close gap in urban mobility

NÜWIEL is closing a supply gap in urban mobility with its eTrailers. Available as either a bicycle trailer or a hand cart, NÜWIEL’s eTrailers can easily transport loads up to 1200 kg. They automatically brake and accelerate thanks to patented sensor technology. Top speeds are 25 km/h for the bicycle version and 6 km/h form the hand cart version. Current customers include IKEA, UPS and the Belgian Post Office. NÜWIEL’s trailers are already being used in Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Denmark and Luxembourg in cities such as Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Dublin and Copenhagen. The team of more than 30 employees from 13 countries is headquartered in the Barmbek district of Hamburg.
