#InnoVoice and Master Student Stefano Talks Coaching and Team Work

InnoEnergy Master’s student Stefano Rosso talks more about his experience on the InnoEnergy Game Changing Impact Programme. He tells us more here, in his second #InnoVoice blog…

It´s exciting but busy! I am currently working on a huge project, which I will be presenting with my team later this year. The additional support provided on the InnoEnergy Game Changing Impact Programme has been super-helpful in getting me to think about how we can improve as a team to deliver success

Coaching to success

As part of the InnoEnergy Game Changing Programme, I have been assigned a coach. The first coaching session was broad in terms of the topics we covered at the beginning but really useful. We quickly homed in on things that concern me and some of the areas I would like to develop.

We addressed a number of different areas. These included:

  • How to make other people accountable within team;
  • Exploring management tools;
  • What to do once I have completed the Master’s programme.

Perfecting skills to improve teamwork

As an Implementer, I have a tendency to just want to get on and start doing. But this sometimes leaves me feeling I am doing everything myself when working in a team. My coach offered some fantastic advice about how I can share the workload within a team environment, rather than doing it all myself. I realise now that taking everything on myself is not good for me but it’s also not good for other people in the team.

I feel quite confident with my ability as a Strategist. However, there are definitely areas I want to improve with regards to my Implementer profile and the way I work within a team – I know there are times I take on too much myself.

My coach and I have been exploring how I have worked in the past and what small changes I can make to improve team activity. Being more aware of how other team members operate and understanding different management tools is definitely helping to improve communication and ensure we get things done.

What happens after my Master’s programme?

During the discussion with my coach he opened my eyes to explore options after my Masters and is encouraging me to think longer term about aspirations and career options. In fact, I am now considering doing another Masters after gaining some more work experience.

Travel is very important to me because I am so curious to find out more about different cultures so it’s been great to get some advice about the skills I need to work abroad. For me, I think speaking a third language is a must but a fourth language would be ideal so as well as dedicating a lot of time alongside my study to improve my Spanish I have just started learning German.

Boosting creativity and innovation

I also attended a recent Master Mind session focusing on creativity and innovation. A group of us came together and each of us talked about a challenge or problem we face.

Everyone provided their take on the problem and feedback about how we can tackle it. This exercise really opened my eyes to look at things from another perspective and explore different ideas.
