EIT InnoEnergy is the number one innovation engine for sustainable energy across Europe supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).
Creating energy that is sustainable in every sense.
For us, true sustainability also means an industry that is commercially viable, endlessly innovative, and highly competitive. We make this possible by supporting the market adoption of pioneering new innovations, without risk or complexity. From mobility to construction - from renewable energy sources to smarter storage - our commercially attractive innovations are nurtured in EIT InnoEnergy's trusted ecosystem. We have invested in nearly 450 assets, which have a forecasted revenue of €16 billion. In addition, 1,400 alumni have graduated from our Master and PhD School programmes, many of whom work for prestigious companies such as Tesla, Siemens, Total and Northvolt. We also bring together 500+ key players from across the energy value chain, from 18 different countries, who have indirect access to 150 million energy consumers. The activities of EIT InnoEnergy are managed through our regional offices located in Benelux, Central Europe, France, Germany, Iberia, and Scandinavia.
More about EIT InnoEnergy as an Investor
In the last ten years we have supported more than 480 companies and today we have one of the largest climate tech investment portfolios worldwide with more than 200 investee companies.
We define ourselves as patient investors as we want opportunities that make impact at large and this goes hand in hand with industrial development. In addition, 85% of our companies are exporting so we are looking for solutions that are highly scalable. Climate change and energy transition are global issues and therefore we need global solutions that can be implemented not only in the nearest markets, but also worldwide, hence we are looking for ambitious plans.
EIT InnoEnergy’s equity holdings are managed following a portfolio management approach with the goal to maximise the return (Economic/Society/Environmental) given the desired level of risk. The risk level taken is commensurate with a portfolio of early-stage companies and scale-ups in sustainable energy. We combine companies with high-capex needs with capex-light business models, often involving software and artificial intelligence solutions to achieve our desired company mix.
We classify companies in our portfolio across seven thematic fields: Renewable Energies, Energy Storage, Smart Electric Grid, Smart and Intelligent Buildings and Cities, Energy Efficiency, Energy for Transport and Mobility and Circular Economy. For each thematic field we have designed a
strategy that takes into account our vision of the market needs to achieve the energy transition targets set up by the EU, the sub-sectors where we see the best market opportunities, and the need to complete the value chain for some of the thematic fields.
At EIT InnoEnergy we are committed to equal opportunity regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or identity. We foster and embrace the diversity found in our workplace and within our trusted eco-system.
