Developing the future of biomass power generation technology

Phoenix BioPower is working to double the efficiency of biomass power generation. By achieving electrical efficiencies of 50 per cent by 2022 and 60 per cent by 2030, Phoenix BioPower will provide the most cost effective path to renewable, plannable, and reliable power for the future.

The need

To limit the effects of climate change, the amount of power generated from renewable sources must double at least every ten years. As nuclear power and fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) are phased out, and hydropower is not an option in many countries, new sources of base load power need to be found. Rapid increases in intermittent power from solar and wind is likely to lead to prices fluctuation and stress on energy systems.

A more plannable energy source is needed to provide more balanced power generation.

The solution

To help meet this challenge, Phoenix BioPower is developing its unique Biomass-fired TopCycle (BTC) technology to double the efficiency of power generation from biomass.

BTC is a high-pressure, integrated plant that converts biomass to electrical power. Gasification of biomass, in combination with a high-pressure gas turbine process and massive steam injection, achieves unprecedented conversion efficiencies.

Hans-Erik invented the BTC technology, and has spent much of his professional life developing gas turbines and developing new technologies. He holds a MSc in engineering.
