Thermal storage of renewable energy and its integration in a hybrid microgrid
Ecovat creates an underground storage vessel with an integrated heat exchange system. This system is designed to be integrated in a hybrid smart microgrid and consists of power-to-heat appliances (e.g. heat pumps, electric heaters and cooled photovoltaics), storage (both thermal and electric) and a smart control system enabling power system balancing by storing surplus energy for use in case of energy shortages.
Renewable energy is not always available when needed, and just as often when energy is available, the quantities produced amount to more than is requiered at a specific time. Storage is the missing link.
Ecovat is a thermal, seasonal storage system that enables heat storage of up to 90°C with minimal energy and exergy loss. Over a period of >6 months less than 10% of energy is lost, exergy losses are less than 7%. Ecovat’s storage system is designed for integration in a hybrid smart microgrid.

- The construction costs of an Ecovat system are substantially lower than comparable systems (which are also less efficient).
