Open Space Studio co-creation session with team VIRTUe from Eindhoven University of Technology

After a great start last year with team STORM and team FAST, Open Space Studio (OSS) gets for a third time the possibility to work with a student team from our partner university TU/e: team VIRTUe.

This time the co-creation session was combined with a teacher training in co-creation . Teaching co-creation isn’t just about theory or methodology. Just like you won’t learn how to drive a car or play an instrument by only reading a book, learning to lead co-creation goes well beyond a lecture alone. A period of practice, building stage upon stage, creates solid leaders and teachers of co-creation, a style of personal development fostered by the Open Space Studio.

The big question for the co-creation session was “How do we design, build and operate the house that will win the Solar Decathlon Middle East competition in Dubai, 2018?”. The Solar Decathlon is an international competition in which universities from all over the world meet to design, build and operate a grid-connected, energetically self-sufficient house. The houses use solar energy as the only energy source and are equipped with all the technologies that permit maximum energy efficiency.

23 students and teachers were led by the OSS team in a collaborative process designed to create a sense of mutual understanding. After the 2 days of co-creation, the whole group came up with 4 main areas of attention, the objectives, results, effects, resources and milestones needed to progress those 4 areas and a choreography of activity with detailed actions which the team is set out to put into practice over the next 22 months in order to be successful in next year’s competition.

Some of the student voices:

“We were searching for a way to get everyone on one track, and the OSS event was just perfect, now we do have the same focus, now we do know each other, now no one is lacking behind. The hardest part now is to keep this and recapture this vibe through (the future).”

“I think our team improved much more than I ever thought we would …”

It was again a successful event and OSS will follow up and continue to support the VIRTUe team.
