We are excited to announce that Lainergy has won the first Central and Eastern European sustainable energy competition, KICkoff, which aims to find the best new potential sustainable energy concept in the region. Lainergy won with their idea of a wave energy converter that is 55% more efficient than any alternative on the market, and is easier to construct and operate. Ekoinwentyka came second with its biotechnology providers proposing a solution to control emissions of volatile organic compounds for customers to meet EU Directive requirements, and Smart Load Solutions, a cloud-based service which can reduce energy bills by optimising and shifting load according to day-ahead market prices, came in third place.
Lainergy was presented with the award on 1 December at a Grand Final held in Cricoteka in Kraków following the deliberations of a jury made up of entrepreneurial experts, including representatives from business angels, research centres and industry. Altogether 8 start-ups presented their innovations with ideas coming from across the sustainable energy field, including energy storage, wind, solar and smart cities.
Rafał Mrówka, CEO for KIC InnoEnergy Poland, congratulated Lainergy on their win, stating: “Lainergy is a worthy winner of what was an extremely hotly-contested competition, with many game-changing ideas entered. This competition gives a platform for ideas which may otherwise have gone undiscovered – the creation of innovative sustainable energy start-ups in Central and Eastern Europe is vital to help the region become ever more economically and environmentally sustainable.”
The winner will receive €10,000 in cash and be invited to take part in the KIC InnoEnergy Highway®, a programme that transforms business ideas into commercial reality. They will join over 90 other start-ups, being provided with exposure to a network of over 150 key players in the energy field, made up of industry partners, universities and research centres. The runner-up, Ekoinwentyka, will receive €5,000 whilst third place, Smart Load Solutions, will receive €3,000.
During the event, the attendants also had a chance to hear the opinions of the renowned speakers: successful entrepreneurs and first line institutional leaders. Ernő Duda, a serial entrepreneur and biotechnology expert, who has started more than 20 companies and been acting as CEO since 1990, gave some tips how to succeed as an entrepreneur, whilst Tomaz Czapliński, expert in due diligence, business model development, financial forecasting and enterprise valuation, presented start-ups from the other point of view. This was a truly inspiring evening. See you at the next year edition!
