The challenges, opportunities and strategies the energy sector is facing were discussed in the seventh edition of the Global Energy Challenges conference held in Barcelona in June 28 and 29. Representatives from academia (MIT, UPC, UB…) and industry (Alstom Wind, IBM, Repsol, GasNatural Fenosa, Endesa/Enel…) debated about the whole value chain of energy with an agenda of topics ranging from offshore wind energy and smartgrids to regulation and entrepreneurship.
Business Creation Services Director of KIC InnoEnergy Iberia, Mr. Josep-Miquel Torregrossa, lead the contents related to entrepreneurship and moderated the workshop “Entrepreneurship is Sustainable Energy”. The aim of the session was to show how the challenges faced by the sector are opening up windows of opportunity for new businesses, and to show how different actors in the financial sector are backing the entrepreneurs. Three start-ups together with a venture capital fund (belonging to CaixaBank the tenth biggest bank in Europe by market capitalization) and a private business angel, shared their insights on venturing in sustainable energies.
The workshop became the occasion to know first hand the experiences and expectations of the different actors participating in the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Energy. The representatives of the start-ups shared the motivations that had driven them to start their projects and, together with the participants related to the financial sector, answered questions from various entrepreneurs within the audience. Both Mr. Joan Albà (Business Angel) and Mr. David Villaró ( Venture Capital – CaixaBank Capital Risc) highlighted the importance of the working team which, in their opinion, has a bigger impact than the business idea itself for the venture to become a successful business.
