The Innovation Journey continues…
From 28 March until 3 April, 32 ‘Energy for Smart Cities’-students attended the first edition of the BIZ bootcamp. This one week course was the second stop of the Innovation Journey, that started with the Smart Cities Week in November. The Innovation Journey is a challenge driven journey where students work in teams to transform challenges (from real companies) into innovative prototypes. ABB, everis and Enervalis are just a few examples of the ten companies that provided challenges to work with. At the BIZ bootcamp, the students worked on their business models, following the innovation proposals they created in the first stage of the journey. The trip ends in Amsterdam, where students will reveal their market feasible prototypes during the Summer School.
Once again it was a jam packed agenda with workshops, presentations, team work and a final competition of course. “3D prototyping”, “Creating successful smart city solutions”, and “IP for engineers and entrepreneurship” are just a few examples of workshops the students attended. Apart from these sessions, the different teams worked on their final presentations and an app for their innovative prototypes. Using elevator pitching techniques, the teams presented their work during the innovation competition.
Who were the winners of this round’s innovation competition? The jury – consisting of Jeroen Büscher (Post Doctoral Researcher at KU Leuven / EnergyVille), Robin de Croon (PhD Student at KU Leuven, Dept. of Computer Science), Mar Martinez (Coordinator of MSc Energy for Smart Cities) and Xavier Crusat (Innovation Manager) – decided on the winning teams:
- Everis’ challenge – more energy sustainable districts
- Fascom’s challenge – sustainable solutions for street lighting in smart cities
- Ionseed’s challenge – intelligent energy management home devices
